Interview with Stephanie Saint Sanchez
Interview by Natalia Rocafuerte
Stephanie Saint Sanchez is a media artist, professor, movie maker, curator y instigator.
How is your winter going, where are you located?
Fighting off urge to hibernate. I check test my sense of smell with a Spritz of Money House Blessing air freshener. Mi Houston Casa has a hot room and cold room. My editing Lair is in the hot room so I'm snug as a Video Mixing bug.
How did you create this piece?
Vilut was created using a DV camcorder and and an old imovie program.
The soundscape was snatched swatches of sounds from everywhere.
What drives your experimental work?
My adoration for obsolete video formats and forgotten media with a good beat you can dance to is what it's all about for me. The Creations are like a video friendship bracelet for weirdos or an elaborate visual pre-produced session for a therapist with a secret
What's it like to be Gen X?
As the poet once said, "It's Whatever." The 80's were Fun/Terrible. Music Fashion Entertainment Crazy Food - Fun. AIDS Crack School Shootings Serial Killers Sexual Abuse - Terrible. To me being Gen X is about being resilient and keeping a fucked up sense of humor and a light on. If at first it don't kill ya try something harder next time.
What are you working on?
Always got a few shrimps on that barbie. Ending out 2020 Dec 26th-Jan 2 Tune in for Happy New Queer! a streaming video variety showcase Featuring some Sassy Dollys from the Future. Working on some super cool content with CholaVision a new media collective. The Locas here in Texas are busy with a Troma Style Queer Film of Epicness.
Whats your favorite assignment to give to your students?
I ask students to describe the first film they remember seeing and to describe it. Also the last film they saw what they liked and or didn't like about it. The best film they saw and the worst film why they liked or did not like it.
Would you care to share your last dream?
Truth be told I've been dipping into the Melatonin as of late and although the dreams are vivid and wackadoodle I cant remember a single thing once I wake up. I would like to share one I will never forget.
I'm in my space car in outer space. I pull up to a Dairy Queen on a Distant Planet and I am desperate for a Large Dr Pepper Extra Ice. William Katt Cuts me off at the drive thru and orders the LAST DR PEPPER in The GALAXY! He drives off Laughing his Curly Blonde Locks mocking me in the space wind.Fuck that Puto William Katt.
