Interview with Karina Cortez
Interview by Natalia Rocafuerte
Karina Cortez (@visualesdekari) is an analog video artist from Oxnard, CA. Using video editors and circuit bent video hardware to glitch signals in ways that our brains processes emotions. Visually showing the thought process with electrical signals to validate the harmony of human emotion.
How is your winter going, where are you located?
My winter is going good!! I definitely love the summer more - but I’m enjoying the slight change in tempature/ environment. I am currently located in Long Beach, CA.
How did you create this piece?
The piece started when I found the song I used for the video. I connected to it immediately. I contacted the artist, @bisonte and they were down for me to use the song. I already had footage I wanted to use, but couldn’t find the perfect song, and I felt the footage deserved that power! That footage was from a day that I spent alone in my room - dedicating my energy directly into making something that felt relieving to me. From there, the video was edited over the first few months of quarantine. It was rough at first - trying to create, but eventually I was able to come back to a flow.
What drives your experimental work?|
Connection! It’s so powerful, and intimate, when my work creates feelings.
Where’s your hometown?
Oxnard!!!
Would you care to share your last dream?
Most of my dreams have an element of water
